After analyzing many of the videos held on this site, I believed that this one was the most thought-provoking video. It made me watch the video at least five times to somewhat understand the true meaning of the poem. The poem demonstrates to us how each one of us has a voice which is important. Koyczan first starts off with humour when he explained the meaning of politics. This lured the audience’s attention to him and he started to illustrate how “many countries have bullets instead of ballets” which represents how some countries have economies that are violent and aggressive. This made me think about the wars that are being held today. How innocent children are kidnapped, the elderly murdered, and how many women are raped. He then tells us how “the only ones that are willing to speak up are forced to live so far beneath the radar” so that they won’t be heard. This made me think about this situation deeper. The radar could symbolize the media. It tells us how the people who are fighting for their rights are ignored and that the corrupted are in control, in this case, the media.
The message of this poem in my opinion was that everyone has a voice which you should use. Koyczan is trying to communicate to us that there are other people besides the ones in our neighbourhood that need our help. He also says how “we will always have a choice, when you stand up to be counted tell the world this is your voice”, this shows how we all have a choice and that we also all have a voice. In order to value your choice he displays that you must speak up to the world and tell them. On the other hand, I would consider this poem as poetry due to the symbolism it refers, the rhyming, and the expression it was told in. I would refer it to both “babble” and “doodle” because you can portray an image in your head and hear the image talk at the same time.
