Alicia Keys - "P.O.W."

  1. I needed to listen to this poem five times and then find the exact words in order to understand its true meaning. I also had to read between the lines to portray what the poet was trying to express. But when I listened to her speak the first time, the first thing I noticed and loved was her emphasizing every word she said whether she said something new or repeated something. I loved how she expressed her emotions mostly with her hand gestures when doing something she really believed in. Just by the way she was seated on the stage showed how much this performance meant to her, how much she belonged on the stage and how much of her emotions she was expressing.
My connection with the poem would be the fact that I was once trying to come clean about something that was really tough to let out because the timing was really wrong. I knew that if I told that person what I felt a year later, that person would have never found it in their heart to ever trust in me again. My interpretation of the message Alicia Keys is trying to portray is that she has not been completely honest with someone she loves, and now when she wanted to tell him or her, she feels that it is too late. This is a poem for sure since it has stanzas and because of the repetition in the fourth stanza where she says:
    A PRISONER OF compromise
    A PRISONER OF compassion
    A PRISONER OF kindness
    A PRISONER OF expectation
    A PRISONER OF my youth
Overall, P.O.W was insightful, meaningful, and most of all beautiful and I have nothing against it.

  2. i liked the poem because of how she expressed herself on the stage and how she feeled on the stage. I liked her emotions on the stage because she stood up, sat down, used her hands to show what is like being a prisoner of war.
I liked how she said she'd rather be in prison because she had someone to blame, but the bars of steal are from her own making, because she's a prisoner of words.
The message of the peom is that she wants to tell someone the truth but cant because she delayed on it.
To me this was poetry because this was from someone's point of view and how she expressed herself to this poem.

  5. I thought that this poem was really powerful in its words and the way that it was said . I belieave that power of her words were really delievered beacause of the way she was ethustiastic about it and she put strength into them when they were said .Also the way she had a pattern when she said a new phrase gave the audience an indication when she was going to start a new phrase .Many teenagers may connect to this poem because when we are surronded by a peer pressure envirmonet when the words you choose to say become the indication weather you fit in or not . We are sometimes forced to say things that would hurt others or to look "cool" we have to use a certain slang . I believe that her message was that words have the power to run our world ,for instance when politicians use words to persuade people . Words can become the imporisonment of many people by they are harmed or treated in a certain way because of what they have said . Words are also the freedom that humans all should have to express themselves as free human biengs . Therefore words are so powerful that they can free or imprison you .
I know this is a poem because there is rhyme to it and also a repitition . She also stops at words that are not complete senteces , and symbolism and imagery are both used .
