1. What you think of the poem, of the poet, of the performance as a whole.
The poem by Bao Phi is very powerful. He speaks well and delivers his message thoughtfully. I think that when he speaks in his vietnamese accent he really grabs the crowds attention. Overall i think that the performance was very good, and it seems as if the poem was rehearsed wonderfully. One thing i could say though was he looked at his paper a lot. 2. Your thoughts, connections, questions, commentary, reactions. What you liked and didn't like. What you noticed, what stood out to you.
I like how bao phi made fun of his race in the poem but in a jokingly way, not a racist one. I think more people should see the world like that and not take racial jokes so seriously at times, because they are not always intended to hurt you. The poem has some strong points when it refers to the war in vietnam and i find that the way Bao Phi read these points really drew a picture in your head.
3. What you think is the message of the poem. What do you think the poet is trying to communicate?
I think that the poet is trying to say that he is proud of being vietanmese and that you are the one that makes him proud of his race. I believe this because when he states how vietnamese people are he makes everything sound good, and not bad.
4. Lastly, take a step back and question it all: is this poetry? What makes it a poem? Think about "doodle" and "babble" and the signs of poetry that we discussed in class.
This is a poem beacuse of many things. For one the way the speaker reads it makes it sound like a poem. There are short breaks and you can sort of "see the stanzas" that the speaker is saying. There is also allusion used in this poem when Bao refers back to the wars.
Bao phi reminds me of a Vietnamese refugee because of some words he said in this poem. A little bit boring :'( and deep but it has good internal Vietnamese rhythm! What i noticed from this poet is his sweater. Phởever. I think the message of this poem is saying how he is proud and what has happened in the past of being Vietnamese (north / south). "Ghosts shaped as my family". Great imagery
