All in all i enjoyed this poem quite a bit, i believe it flowed quite nice, and it was very insightful and it got me to think. I also think very highly of Lauryn Hill, as she has been an icon in the past, a figure of individuality, her music, her work, everything is all very inspiring. I thought that this poem was well writen and the issues discussed about motives and thoghts caused my mind to really think. The flow of the poem reminded me somewhat of her music smooth yet with a potent underlyning point. I wonder if she has made any music directly related to this poem? I liked how the poem sounded and i noticed that she seemed very serious about what she was saying. It was as if she had a message, and it had to be heard. IN FACT i think that the message she was trying to portray about "motives and thoughts" was to watch your own motives and thoghts. That in our day and age our motives, and our thoughts have all been corrupted. That we have lost sight of what was truely important. I enjoyed a metaphor that she used, when she said "few can see through the new emporors clothes". I see alot of meaning in those words, i think it can sum up her whole poem because it means to me that the new ruler of people's lives, "the new emporor" wears a thick robe, and what he stands for, lying, for all that has come of people in this day and age. And that robe that blocks out the sun shuns us from being able to realize the truth, it restricts us from watching our motives and thoughts. I think she is trying to tell us to look at ourselves and see what our motives and thoughts really are, to make sure we are on the right track. This is definately a poem, it contains stanzas, beautiful language, symbologies, allusions, metaphors. When i listen to it, her depictive language helps for me to visualise what points she is trying to make. All in all a great two thumbs up (not to mention that im related to her...) :)
1:37 "God is the saviour. Studies behaviour. Trying to fix the mixed mind that he gave ya." This line really caught my attention. Coming from a more religious background where we're taught that God created everything and knows everything; makes you wonder why God can't just fix things then? There are so many problems and conflicts in the world based simply upon poor decisions or bad motives that some people have. Motives and thoughts effect everyone; whoever they are. Whether it's the government of a country or a member in your own family; intentions and motives really portray what sort of character one has. One point that i think she also made was that the media and the world around us are trying to play with our minds and divert our attention from the real problems in the world. They try to influence us and turn our thoughts away from what we should be more concerned or alarmed about. For example the war in Afghanistan, people are dying everyday there but now we barely even hear about it in the news. But if 'Octomom' takes her 14 kids to the park, it's the big headline in the papers or magazines. Our thinking, in a way, has been corrupted by the media and by the government. Today, some of us have lost track of what is truly imprtant and what we should be focussing our attention on. I enjoyed this poem and found it quite eye-opening and inspiring. --Shafia Khan*
