Kanye West - "Self Conscious"

  1. This is by far one of the few poems that entertained me, i'm usually day dreaming when someone reads a poem to me; I think its probably because it didn't sound like a stereotypical poem, but more like a song. Songs are a form of poetry though. I thought the performance was pretty good because he acted twitchy and stuttered a few times, trying to represent someone that really cares about what other people think of them. I think that the message of this poem was that people now a days judge people too much on what they wear/how they look; as a result we start to buy expensive clothing we don't need to fit in. I mean True Religions are $425 at boysco, since when are jeans only cool because they are worth that much. What really stood out to me was when Kanye was talking about majoring in something as long as its in university, I can relate to that since many of my friends parents just want them to go to university, not caring what they do as long as they get in, they just want to brag to other parents that their kids are in a ivy league school or whatever.

  2. The poem really does talk about Kanye. He still keeps is (rap-game) theme in his poetry which made it funny. I wonder if all that he spoke about is actually true in his life or not. I think Kanye itrying to say not to play around withyour life and make it look too 'cool' because it could make you end up in a bad situation. In my opinion, this is a doodle poem because I can actually see him in my mind acting out in te poem as if it were acually a movie clip. I could also hear foreshadowing because he talks about what will happen to you in the future if you take the wrong road into life.

  3. I find it kind of ironic that this is coming from Kanye, who is probably the most self conscious person out there, but will never really admit it. As a whole, I thought he delivered the poem well and acted squeamish enough. I thought the quotes "The people highest up got the lowest self esteems" and "We bought our way out of jail but we can't buy freedom" were prime examples of how the rich and famous get so self-obsessed and self conscious. In truth however you can never escape who you are on the inside, no matter how much you "glamour" up yourself. I see this as mostly babble because you wouldn't be able to pick up the twitches and behaviour if you just read it alone. The rhyming alone can make this a poem, but the internal meaning is what everybody looks out for. What the "Mic-snatcher" is trying to communicate to us is that everyone has a level of insecurity and tries to hide it in some way. In common stereotypical terms, he says the rich, who so often stick their noses down at us, have seemingly worser lives because they're not true to themselves. Rather than accept who they are, they become what everybody expects them to be.

  4. i thought this poem was unique. He basically took a song, and made it into a poem, which confused me at first. The poet (Kanye) is saying many things that are, in my opinion, very true. "the people highest up got the lowest self esteem". Kanye is now pretty wealthy and he is self-conscious. He's also trying to say that everyone is insecure in a way, but try to hide it, because of society and what others would think about it.
i find that there is some foreshadowing in this, because he's telling us, more like warning us of the problems we'll have to face in the future.
he says he's going to be the best dressed rapper in the game. he's being pretty "cocky", in my opinion, but it is kind of true that he is pretty well dressed now-a-days, and is sponsored by high class companies (Louis Vuitton, for example).
When he says "i just spent 400 buck on this, just to be like ____ you ain't up on this", i think he's trying to say how, when we have something worth of value or something we like, it eventually gets taken away by anyone or authority, or that thing of value is mistreated by others.
People are also changing their ways, just to be seen and fit in society. Some buy some of the most expensive clothes, not just to look nice, but to have that Power, authority, or class over one another by showing it off to others.
A sign of poetry I think, would be him stuttering, and taking pauses (instead of rapping it out). Which makes it sound like it would be a poem.
